MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers are acquiring more veteran pitching help as the team prepares to make a playoff push when the All-Star break ends this weekend.
According to MLB insider Brian McTaggart, the Brewers and Houston Astros have agreed on a trade that will send starting pitcher and two-time World Series winner Lance McCullers Jr. and lefty Colton Gordon to Milwaukee. In exchange for McCullers Jr., the Brewers will send 21-year-old prospect Jadyn Fielder, son of Brewers great Prince Fielder, to the Astros. Milwaukee will also pick up McCullers Jr.’s whole $7 million contract for the rest of the season.
Fielder has hit .233 in 133 at-bats this season for the Brewers’ Single-A affiliate, the Wilson Warbirds, with three home runs and 23 RBIs.
McCullers Jr., 32, has been on the IL since May 19th due to a shoulder injury and has struggled this season when healthy, holding a record of 2-3 with a 6.86 ERA and 43 strikeouts. He is set to become a free agent at the end of the season after signing an extension with Houston back in 2022.
Milwaukee has been retooling its starting rotation in recent days, as both Jacob Misiorowski and Kyle Harrison have been dealing with fatigue and injury-related issues, while Brandon Woodruff is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after being placed on the 60-day injured list last week due to ongoing shoulder issues.
