MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The only scheduled debate between Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Crowley and Republican candidate Tom Tiffany was held Wednesday evening.
The debate was hosted and moderated by WISN-TV.
The hourlong debate covered a range of issues, including inflation, education, data centers, immigration enforcement and property taxes. The candidates also challenged each other on abortion.
Tensions flared at times as Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, and Tiffany, a U.S. representative, criticized each other’s records and policy positions.
Education emerged as a recurring theme, with both candidates outlining their priorities for Wisconsin schools.”We’re going to make sure that when money goes to schools, it goes in the classroom,” Tiffany said, adding that teachers should be paid more and have safe classrooms.
Crowley said school districts have increasingly turned to referendums because the state has not met its obligations to fund education and districts lack sufficient resources. Tiffany said he wants to increase school funding. Crowley countered by criticizing Tiffany’s support for eliminating the U.S. Department of Education.
Crowley also criticized Tiffany’s ties to President Donald Trump, arguing that policies supported by the congressman in Washington should not be replicated in Wisconsin. Crowley accused Tiffany of voting to protect the war in Iran, saying his votes contributed to rising gas and diesel prices. Tiffany responded by accusing Crowley of focusing too much on Trump and not enough on Wisconsin.
