WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Visitors to Wausau will see new welcome signs as the “Welcome Home to Wausau” signs are retired.
The new signs feature an updated logo, providing “a fresh look that reflects the City’s identity and helps foster a sense of place,” according to a news release from Mayor Doug Diny’s office.
“As we move forward with our current logo and refreshed signage, we also want to recognize the role these signs played for decades,” said Mayor Doug Diny. “This is a simple way to celebrate the past while embracing the future,” said Diny.
The Marathon County Historical Society will house one of the former signs. Executive Director Blake Opal-Wahoske says visuals like that can bring back memories for anyone with a tie to the city. “For decades, thousands of people passed these signs as they entered Wausau. Preserving one allows us to document an era in our community’s visual identity and, someday, help tell the story of what Wausau looked and felt like at this moment in its history.”
The public will have a chance to bid on the second sign during a public auction. Details of when and where that will take place will be announced later.
