MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers are sending one of their top young pitchers back to the minors as his struggles in the big league continued on Wednesday night.
According to Brewers insider Adam McCalvy, Milwaukee has optioned Brandon Sproat back to AAA Nashville after he walked four and gave up four runs in a relief appearance against the Cubs. After the game, manager Pat Murphy was asked about Sproat’s future with the team, saying, “It’s unacceptable. You’ve got to throw the ball over the plate or you can’t be a Major League pitcher.”
Sproat, 25, was once a top-100-ranked prospect and has had a rough first season with the Brewers after being acquired from the Mets in the deal that sent Freddy Peralta to New York. He is 3-7 so far this season with a 5.57 ERA, and it seems likely that he could be left off the Brewers’ playoff roster when it’s finalized later this month.
