WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — What started as an automatic crash detection alert near Wausau West High School ended with an OWI arrest by Wausau PD over the weekend.
Officers were called to the crash on Stevens Drive at 6:00 AM Saturday, where they found a vehicle crashed into a tree. Officers found an open container of alcohol in the console, and later learned that the driver was operating without insurance.
The driver was arrested for a first-offense OWI, according to a Facebook post. The incident was reported through an iPhone’s automatic crash detection feature.
Officers said they released the information to show that drunk or impaired driving happens at all hours. They said if the celebration catches up to you, services like taxis, rideshares (Uber or Lyft), or calling friends and family are always available.
“We cannot stress enough. If you drink, there are much better options available to get you to/from your desired location. Nothing is worth losing your car, losing your money, or losing a life,” officers added.
