STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The public is invited to a ceremonial groundbreaking for what will become the new City Hall in Stevens Point this Friday.
Mayor Mike Wiza says everyone is welcome to mark the start of the project, designed to make city services more efficient. “Right now, if you want, let’s say a bartender’s license, you have to go to the Clerk’s office and fill out the paperwork. Then, you take all of that down the hall and around the corner to the finance department to pay your [fee] and get your receipt. Then, you take that back down the hall and around the corner to the Clerk’s office to prove you paid.”
It’s the same routine for many other city permits. Wiza says once the new building is online, those windows will be in the same area.
He estimates that the project will also save taxpayers in the long run, because the county will be able to remodel the current courthouse instead of building new.
Mayor Wiza says custom shovels have been made for the occasion, joking that he hopes they don’t give him a blister while tossing the dirt.
Contractors have been working at the site for a couple of weeks now. Wiza says that if all goes according to plan, a ribbon-cutting may be held at this time next year.
