STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Good news for fans who have been clamoring for Wisconsin to join the high school basketball shot clock movement.
WAOW TV reports that the WIAA Board of Control has voted 10-1 to implement a 35-second shot timer for varsity basketball in time for the 2028-’29 competition season.
The move brings Wisconsin in line with a recommendation from the National Federation of State High School Associations, calling for states to make the change. That was issued in 2021; since then, more than 20 states have approved shot clocks. Six more will do so for the upcoming season, including Illinois and Oklahoma.
Wisconsin would be one of two states implementing the practice in 2028-’29, with Pennsylvania being the other.
Leaders also voted to allow schools to use a shot clock for non-conference games during the upcoming season, if both coaches agree.
The move requires approval from the full membership in 2027 because it would impose a cost on member schools that aren’t already equipped to handle the change.
