MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers suffered a tough 9-2 loss at the hands of the Houston Astros on Saturday afternoon, and manager Pat Murphy did not hold back how he felt his starting pitcher had performed in recent games.
Following the loss, Murphy was critical of the Brewers’ pitcher Brandon Sproat, saying, “I think he took a step back. I don’t think he was very good. We’re not going to tolerate too many duds like this,” adding, “If he’s not going to step up—we’re trying to win. We’re not rebuilding.” Sproat responded to Murphy’s comments by saying, “Right now it’s tough. I’ve got to be better.”
Sproat (1-4) gave up six hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings on Saturday and holds an ERA of 6.24 on the season. It marked his second straight rough start after he gave up three earned runs and four walks to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month.
Sproat, along with fellow top prospect Jett Williams, was acquired by Milwaukee this past offseason in the trade that sent former ace Freddy Peralta to the New York Mets. He was the top prospect in the Mets system in early 2025 and peaked at No. 24 on FanGraphs’ 2025 overall Top 100 list. He also reached No. 40 on MLB Pipeline’s rankings in August 2024.
