MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection has announced confirmed cases of Chronic Wasting Disease in two deer farms, including one in Portage County
Lab results confirmed CWD in a three-year-old buck. The facility had been quarantined and will be investigated by staff from DATCP and the US Department of Agriculture.
Officials also confirmed a two-year-old elk tested positive for the disease in Crawford County. That farm has also been quarantined and will be investigated.
It’s unclear if either farm will be depopulated as a result of the positive tests. Additionally, officials did not name the farms.
CWD is a fatal, neurological disease of deer, elk, and moose caused by an infectious protein called a prion that affects the animal’s nervous system. DATCP regulates deer farms for registration, recordkeeping, disease testing, movement, and permit requirements.
