LAKE TOMAHAWK, WI (WSAU) — There will be no charges filed against the Oneida County Sheriff’s Officer who shot and killed a man during an attempted arrest in June.
Officers fired on John Karga as they were trying to take him into custody for charges including first-degree sexual assault of a child. He was confronted on June 17th, leading to a struggle.
At one point, Karga retreated into his home and came out with a firearm. He then ignored several commands to drop the weapon before firing one shot.
A deputy returned fire, and Karga died at the scene.

Oneida County District Attorney Jillian Pfeifer said Krga’s continued refusal to comply with law enforcement’s commands and decision to discharge his firearm showed the deputy was justified in using lethal force.
Agencies including local police from Minocqua, Woodruff, and Rhinelander assisted at the scene. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
The State DOJ-Division of Criminal Investigation handled the investigation into the matter before turning its results over to the Oneida County DA for a final charging decision.
