STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Move-in day at UWSP will look a bit different this month as crews continue to rebuild Business 51, or Division Street, in Stevens Point.
Mayor Mike Wiza says the city is likely to implement temporary one-way streets and other traffic control measures to make the process as smooth as possible, similar to what was used during the 2023 USGA Men’s Senior Open.
“We’re working with the University right now to make the process as smooth as possible. We’re looking at some temporary one-way [streets] to make sure traffic flows,” said Wiza. “We will also have signs on the highway that say ‘UWSP students, take this exit.’ [Then additional signs] navigating you around the construction so you can get to your dorm, your frat house, whatever it happens to be, in the least impactful way.”
Division Street is undergoing a multi-million dollar reconstruction project, which Wiza has previously described as a “generational” project. Work will be spread out over the next four summers, ending with the completion of Central Phase 2 in 2030.
The city has a dedicated website for the project. Residents are encouraged to check it often for the latest closures and detours.
