Northwoods League
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Both of Wausau’s Northwoods League clubs were involved in thrilling finishes on Thursday, but only one was on the right end of it.
The Wausau Ignite scored an 8-6 win over Minot. Down 6-4 in the 7th, the Ignite defense got out of the runners-on-the-corners jam. Claire Calmes(UW-Madison), 0-3 on the day, would strike a single into centerfield and be brought to second with a Brynn Daniel walk. Riley Schwisow(Northwestern State), pinch-hitting for Ava Arenz, struck a clutch double, scoring Calmes and putting Daniel, the tying run, on third. Gabby Sosa, with a single early in the game and earning her first hit of the season just one night ago, stepped up to the plate. Sosa struck a 3-run bomb to center field to walk off the game for an 8-6 win.
Meanwhile, the Woodchucks fell to Fond du Lac, 8-7. Wausau had to work from behind at Herr-Baker Field, after the Dock Spiders scored two runs in the third inning to take the lead. The Woodchucks scored in the fourth when Caleb Danzeisen (Arizona) drove in Joey McLaughlin (Arkansas State) on an RBI single. McLaughlin scored the game-tying run in the sixth inning on a Dylan LaPointe (Mercer) sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.
The Dock Spiders scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain their lead before the game entered a brief weather delay. After the delay, Wausau closed the gap to one run in the seventh when Kyler Northrop (Washington State) scored on an error. In the eighth, Wausau tied things again on an RBI ground rule double from Gaven Obremski (Rock Valley CC/Western Illinois).
The rest of the scoring came in extra innings. Wausau took the lead in the tenth with a wild RBI single from Ryan Chase (Santa Fe CC/Kansas), but Fond du Lac responded with a game-tying run in the bottom half. In the eleventh, Wausau snatched the lead back with sacrifice fly RBIs from Kyler Northrop and Caleb Karll (Montevallo), only for Fond du Lac to score three runs in the final frame to walk it off.
The Woodchucks will host Fond du Lac tonight at Athletic Park. First pitch is at 6:35. The Ignite will use today as a travel day, visiting Minot for a four-game set starting with a doubleheader on Saturday.
