STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A long-awaited road project will get underway next spring in Stevens Point.
Mayor Mike Wiza says Division Street will be torn up in two places as soon as the ground thaws next year, leading to a summer of headaches for drivers and local businesses. Wiza says they will maintain access where and when they can, but everyone should plan for extra time and detours. “We are going from the four-lane [layout] that we have now to one lane in each direction with a turn lane in the middle,” said Wiza. “There will be some other modifications, but that is going to disrupt traffic on the northern and southern sections.
“We will keep it open as much as possible- work on one side of the road, then maybe the other, to keep it as accessible as possible, but businesses will be affected,” added Wiza.
He doesn’t want those businesses to suffer, saying everyone should keep shopping and dining in the area, but be careful when doing so. He also suggests buying gift cards for your friends and family this season to keep those businesses top of mind for everyone.
The project has been at the center of years of strong debate, votes, and controversy in the city. But Wiza says now that they have settled on a format, they’re ready to put the project out for bids so work can begin as soon as possible in 2026.
He encourages everyone to stay updated on the project through the city’s website and by following all posted detours and closures throughout the summer.
