WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Three residents have applied to fill the District 5 Alder seat in Wausau, left vacant following the death of longtime representative Gary Gisselman.
According to the published agenda for the October 14th Council meeting, Jim Wadinski, Aaron Griner, and Steve Schmidt will be interviewed by the current council. Alders will then vote one of them into the seat, with that person serving the remainder of the term.
Wadinski served two years on the council after Gisselman stepped away in 2020, but failed to win re-election when Gisselman decided to run again in 2022. Griner is hoping for a double play after winning appointment to the Marathon County Board District 5 seat, also held by Gisselman at the time of his death.
Gisselman died of natural causes at the age of 82 back in August, just four days after he helped chair a committee meeting of the City Council. Alders chose to fill the vacancy through an application and interview process so the seat would be filled in time for votes on important decisions, like the city budget. That person then has the option to run for a full term starting in December if they so choose.
