TOWN OF ROME, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Residents in the Town of Rome are continuing to push back against a proposed solar project, which they say will not work for their town.
It is the latest on the proposed Akron Solar Project, in which a town meeting was held over the weekend, with a high turnout from residents.
“The interest of the population has been extremely high,” said Town Chairman, Carl Hasdal. “We are not in favor of this, it doesn’t work for us.”
The developer of the solar farm, NextEra, is looking to secure a permit from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. The proposed location in parts of Rome and Adams County doesn’t sit well with many residents.
“This is now MFL land (Managed Forest Law), and people are allowed to use it for hunting, nature walks, foraging, you name it,” said Hasdal. “2,000 acres disappear, wildlife habitat disappears.”
Other concerns include the rerouting of ATV, UTV and snowmobile trails. Project Developer for NextEra, Danilo Cabrera, says that they will be at the Power Sports Show at the Adams County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 4th.
