WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — A Milwaukee-area Court of Appeals Judge is the second person to declare for the 2026 Supreme Court race.
Judge Maria Lazar, who currently serves on the District II Court of Appeals, announced her candidacy, saying she wants to take politics out of these elections and “Counter the hundreds of millions of dollars spent to push a partisan narrative in these nonpartisan races.
“We need to draw a line in the sand and stop the destruction of our courts, especially our State Supreme Court,” Lazar added. “I am an independent, impartial judge who strives to follow the law and Constitution in every decision I make from the bench. It is time to restore that level of judicial dedication to the Court.”
Her announcement was immediately slammed by Judge Chris Taylor, who is also running for the seat. “Just like Rebecca Bradley, Maria Lazar has spent her career rolling back people’s rights, attacking reproductive health care and voting rights, and doing the bidding of powerful special interests and her billionaire friends. If elected, Maria Lazar would be the most extreme member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” said Taylor.
Voters will decide the race as part of the April 7th non-partisan elections. Should a third candidate enter the race, a primary would be held in late February.
The winner will replace Rebecca Bradley and serve a ten-year term on the High Court, expiring in 2036.
