STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Mayor Mike Wiza is hoping to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in big ways.
“I was around in 1976, the bicentennial, and we painted fire hydrants red, white, and blue. There were parades- we want to try to do something that big,” said Wiza.
Plans aren’t in place just yet, but he has some ideas flowing. Wiza says he may also try to get other communities on board. “I have a conference with a bunch of other Mayors, so I’m going to see what they are doing. Maybe we will do a statewide, coordinated effort. Maybe an Air Force flyover.
“We’re always looking for ideas. If anyone has something they want to see, you can always reach out to my office. We’ll see if we can make it happen. I want to make the 250th [celebration] our biggest and best one yet,” added Wiza.
He says Riverfront Rendezvous 2026 will also be bigger and better. “Better fireworks, bigger bands, better headliners.”
That doesn’t mean you should get your hopes up for your favorite Top 40 or Country act. “The problem is, something as small as a cover band can be $10,000 to $20,000. It can get expensive. But we are going to do our best to allocate a little extra money next year.”
Planning for Riverfront Rendezvous 2026 is already underway.
