CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI (WSAU) – According to the city’s police department, a child playing in a forested area in Chippewa Falls found what appeared to be a pipe bomb but was a live device.
An official statement states that the child on the city’s south side found the suspicious object close to Grant Court and East Wisconsin Street. He told his father, who prepared to bring the device to the police station before being instructed to leave it for officers. He did so, and after setting up a perimeter, detectives located it around E. Central St., close to High St.
The device was taken to the police department’s firing range where it was destroyed by members of the Marathon Co. Bomb Squad, according to CFPD.
The police department said that it remains unclear how long the object had been at the location. They stated that they have not discovered any evidence of any more devices, and police will continue checking the area to make sure. Additionally, people in the area are being warned to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
