WESTON, WI (WSAU) — Residents in Weston may pay their taxes at the new Municipal Center on Camp Phillips Road next month.
President Mark Maloney says the Board plans to meet with the contractor for the facility to push for a December 12th soft opening. At the very least that would mean residents can pay their 2023 tax bill at the center, which is nearly complete after the Board voted to approve the 2023 budget on Monday.
The budget includes debt payments for the cost of the new Municipal Center. Maloney says that’s folded into the roughly 3% tax increase over 2022. They also got fortunate to complete the borrowing for the facility before the recent series of rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. “We got that immediately, so the new building is inside that increase,” said Maloney. “There is no special assessment. I know it’s been bantered about and talked about, but that’s on a 20-year loan at extremely low rates.”
Maloney says residents may notice the biggest chunk of the bill for the new center will be on the 2024 taxes. The amount will begin to taper off for the remainder of the term.
He adds that the new budget will maintain the level of services that residents expect. “The spring and fall pickup, leaf and big item drop-off, we’re trying to keep the services we have without raising the prices,” said Maloney.
No residents spoke out for or against the budget during the public hearing. The budget then passed the board unanimously.
He adds that residential growth in the last few years has helped with the tax burden along with some commercial growth as well. Discount grocer Aldi opened their Weston location on Schofield Avenue in October, and Caribou Coffee will open on Wednesday. Additional housing developments are possible in the next few years, some of which are in the very early planning stages and were discussed during Monday’s meeting.
Maloney expects official communication regarding where residents should pay their taxes to be delivered next week. Additionally, the board will be working to schedule an open house and tours of the new facility next spring.
Monday’s meeting was held at the new facility at 4747 Camp Phillips Road. The village is still working to furnish the building and get their staff moved in.
