Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — A Madison man has been sentenced for attacking a youth counselor at Lincoln Hills School during an incident that preceded the death of counselor Corey Proulx.
Javarius Hurd will serve three years in prison and three years on extended supervision with credit for time already served, meaning the first part of that sentence is nearly complete.
The sentence includes fines and court costs. Hurd will also have a full no-contact order against the victim and the Lincoln Hills School.
The count stems from the June 2024 death of Proulx, which started when Hurd threw a cup of soapy water in the face of another correctional officer. He then ran into an outdoor recreation area, where Proulx tried to restrain him.
Proulx fell, hit his head, and died a few hours later. Hurd was initially charged with reckless homicide in connection with his death but was found not guilty at trial.
Friday’s sentencing included one victim impact statement. Hurd also spoke.
The three-year prison term amounts to about 1,095 days. Hurd was credited with 858 days in jail awaiting trial, meaning he will be due for release in about eight months. The case has taken a winding road to trial, with Hurd’s defense team unsuccessfully arguing to move proceedings to the juvenile system. Earlier this year, a proposed plea deal also fell apart at the last minute. That called for Hurd to plead not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect (NGI), which would have set up a phase two trial, focused on his mental state at the time of the incident.
A second man, Rian Nyblom, is serving prison time for his role in the incident. Nyblom knew of Hurd’s plans and gave him the cup of soapy water he used at the start of the attack. He is serving five years in the state prison system.
