STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The city of Stevens Point says a bad actor is impersonating official city departments in an attempt to scam user groups.
Mayor Mike Wiza says the emails appear to lift information from publicly available city agendas and request payment for licenses that the groups may be applying for. In one case, organizers of the downtown holiday parade were asked to send a fee to cover beer and wine licenses.
“This is NOT coming from the city,” said Wiza. “It appears someone is using the publicly posted meeting agendas to scrape information about permit applications and then using it to try and scam the applicant into remitting some ‘fee.'”
Wiza says anyone who receives the message should delete it and contact the city directly to see if they owe a licensing fee. Those numbers are listed below:
