MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man will serve eight years in federal prison after he was caught trafficking cocaine out of his home in 2024.
Johntay Johnson pled guilty to the charge this summer after undercover officers conducted multiple controlled purchases from the 40-year-old, including a handful that occurred at Johnson’s home in Wausau.
Johnson was arrested in September 2024 at his home, where officers found cocaine and marijuana along with three firearms and $13,000 in cash. Drug paraphernalia, including a digital scale and packaging materials, were also seized.
Two of the guns had previously been reported stolen.
He was charged in state court on drug and gun charges and released on a cash bond. He immediately returned to selling drugs, dealing cocaine to another undercover informant in November 2024.
US District Judge William Conley handled the case. During sentencing, he noted that Johnson’s cocaine trafficking was aggravated by multiple factors, including his possession of multiple firearms, his quick return to drug dealing after being arrested in the middle of this investigation, and his lengthy criminal record that includes five prior convictions for cocaine trafficking.
Multiple local agencies were involved in the case, including the Marathon, Portage, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Wausau and Mountain Bay Metro PD, and Wisconsin State Patrol. The FBI and Wisconsin National Guard Drug Counter Program were also involved.
