Tony Haase
WAUPACA, WI (WSAU) — A Waupaca County man has been found not guilty in connection with a 1992 double murder.
Court records show a 12-person jury returned a not guilty verdict for Tony Haase Monday morning. The case has been dismissed, and an acquittal will be prepared.
The 54-year-old had been accused of killing Tanna Togstad and Tim Mumbrue in 1992. Prosecutors had argued that Haase’s DNA was found at the scene, though his defense said investigators should consider another suspect, who lived near the scene and had a history of violence.
That person died by suicide 30 years ago.
Jurors deliberated for nearly four days, including time spent rewatching an interview with Haase, where prosecutors said he admitted to the crime. The defense successfully argued that he was coerced into confessing.
Haase was arrested and charged in 2022. His bond was terminated shortly after the verdict was read.
Last week it was revealed that jurors were having a difficult time coming to a unanimous decision.
