STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — With the National Weather Service issuing a Heat Advisory for much of Wisconsin beginning Saturday afternoon, officials in Stevens Point are reminding residents how to stay cool.
Everyone is reminded to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks. If outdoor work or exercise makes your heart pound and gives you shortness of breath, stop immediately and call for help.
Check on elderly neighbors or others who may not handle the heat well, and make sure you provide ample water and shade for outdoor pets and livestock.
Animals and small children also should not be left in a locked vehicle, where temperatures can become deadly in a matter of minutes, even with a cracked window.
Portage County also has a list of official cooling centers for those in need of relief from the heat. Click here for the list.
In Marshfield, city leaders will open the lobbies of the Police and Fire Stations for use as a cooling center. Additional cooling centers can be found here.
Temps are expected to be above 90 by Saturday, with overnight lows in the mid-70s.
