WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny vetoed a plan to sell three city-owned properties, saying the sale price is too low and the city would have to spend thousands more on remediation.
The lots, on the 200 block of Wyatt Street, would be sold for $1,000. The city may have to cover another $25,000 in clean-up costs.
The Mayor notes that one of the parcels is water-view land and is being offered well below market value.
The sale was approved by the city council earlier this month on an 8-2 vote. If no alders change their votes, the veto could be overridden. A date for an override vote, which requires a two-thirds majority, has not been scheduled.
This is the third veto of Mayor Diny’s term. One earlier veto, objecting to hiring a land consultant for other city-owned property, was upheld by a single vote. Another veto of a non-binding resolution where the City Council urged Congress not to cut Medicaid funding, was unanimously overridden.
