MADISON, WI (WSAU) — No shortage of Badgers sports action from Saturday.
The UW volleyball team defeated Texas Christian in straight sets to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen (25-9, 25-11, and 25-23). Sarah Franklin led the attack with 13 kills and two blocks. Gulce Guctekin recorded 11 digs, while Izzy Ashburn and MJ Hammill had 18 and 11 set assists, respectively.
The Badgers held TCU to a .015 hitting percentage (33 kills, minus 28 hitting errors, divided by 98 attack attempts).
Wisconsin will host the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight beginning December 8th. The Badgers have drawn conference rival Penn State in the next round, with Florida and Pittsburgh meeting in the other regional semifinal.
The Badger MBB team defeated Marquette at Fiserv Forum 80-77 in overtime behind 19 points from Chucky Hepburn and 15 points from Tyler Wahl.
Max Klesmit added 13 points.
Both teams shot over 50% from the field for the game and better than 40% from three-point land.
Hepburn did most of his damage in the first half before leaving the game with an injury.
The two sides went to overtime tied at 70. Wisconsin won the extra frame 10-7.
Wisconsin moves to 6-2 on the season and will begin conference play against Maryland on Tuesday. Tip time is set for 8 PM, pregame coverage on WSAU will start at 7.
Men’s hockey fell to Michigan 4-2 despite goals from Jack Horbach and Carson Bantle. Jared Moe made 33 saves in net.
Wisconsin picked up their first conference win in Friday’s game. After the series split, Wisconsin is now 7-9 overall and 1-7 in league play. They travel to Minneapolis for a two-game set against Minnesota next weekend.
One day after pouring in 13 goals against Bemidji State, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team defeated the Beavers a second time 4-1. Britta Curl netted two goals, Vivian Jungels and Kristen Simms rounded out the scoring. Cami Kronish made nine saves in the win.
The Badgers will continue conference play with two games at MSU Mankato next weekend.
