STEVENS POINT, Wi (UWSP-WSAU) — UW-Stevens Point head football coach Greg Breitbach has announced he is stepping down from his position to pursue other opportunities.
“UWSP was a springboard in my career in my first stint here,” said Breitbach. “I am grateful for the opportunity to come back and be the head coach of this great program. I’ve spent 30 years coaching at five universities and many, many players. I hope I have been a small part of their success moving forward. I also want to thank John Miech, Frank O’Brien, Fred Hebert and Brad Duckworth for having the confidence in me. Once a Pointer, always a Pointer.” Breitbach has led the UWSP football program for the last four years, including guiding the Pointers through the unknown of the COVID-19 pandemic and a resultant lost season. On the field, five of his nine wins were at home, including a 27-21 win over then-No. 10 UW-Oshkosh in 2018. He coached 24 all-conference selections in three full seasons and had a player named to an all-region team each season. In 2018, he coached Christian Almonte to a WIAC Special Teams Player of the Year honor. “I’d certainly like to thank Coach Breitbach for his work with Pointer Football,” said UWSP Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth. “Our football team took great strides off the field during Greg’s tenure. Our team performed better in the classroom, worked hard on social justice, diversity and inclusion, and were tremendous community advocates. I wish nothing but the best for the entire Breitbach family moving forward.” UW-Stevens Point athletics will begin a national search for the next head football coach. |
